Every program below is either free to eligible veterans/spouses or funded through GI Bill, VET TEC, MyCAA, or SkillBridge. If a program asks for money upfront and won't take one of these, walk.
- VET TEC — VA-funded tech training (software, data, cyber, IT).
- Google Career Certificates — free for veterans through partner nonprofits.
- AWS re/Start, Microsoft Software & Systems Academy (MSSA) — cloud and enterprise IT.
- Hiring Our Heroes Fellowship — SkillBridge-authorized corporate fellowships.
- Onward to Opportunity (O2O) — free career training from Syracuse IVMF.
2. Mental health that isn't a 6-week wait
VCN is not clinical care. When clinical care is needed, these lower the wait time significantly:
- Vet Center (readjustment counseling) — separate from the VA hospital system, often faster intake.
- Cohen Veterans Network — free clinical care for post-9/11 veterans and their families.
- Give an Hour — free mental-health sessions from licensed providers.
- 988 (press 1) — Veterans Crisis Line, 24/7.
3. Financial — beyond the VA home loan
Most veterans know about the VA loan. Fewer know about the SCRA interest-rate caps, state property-tax exemptions for disabled veterans, and the Veterans Business Outreach Center (VBOC) for founders.
4. Hiring — where the good jobs actually get posted
Skip generic job boards. Go where employers specifically recruit veterans and spouses:
- RecruitMilitary, Hire Heroes USA, Corporate Gray — active job boards.
- MSEP employer list — 700+ spouse-friendly employers.
