Quieting the Inner Critic After Service

The voice that used to keep you alive doesn't turn off just because you took the uniform off. Here's how to work with it, not against it.

5 min read

There is a voice inside a lot of veterans, spouses, and first responders that shows up hardest right after service ends. It sounds like standards. It sounds like accountability.

Reframing the inner critic doesn't mean silencing it. It means changing its job description.

One move: name it. "That's my inner sergeant." Naming creates distance, and distance is where choice lives.

Another: check the evidence. The critic loves absolutes. Ask it for specifics.

A third: give the voice one concrete standard to enforce this week — a workout, a promise, a conversation.

The goal isn't a softer version of you. The goal is a version who still holds a standard but doesn't burn the house down over a missed email.
